Springtime Brownies
May 6, 2008 by mountainriverjournal

For all the entertainment of high water boat fishing on the White or Norfork, the chance to pick up a small box of flies and wade is something not to be missed. And look what we found.

The Journal freely admits he is a neophyte where smallmouth are concerned. Its not that we haven’t caught some but we have only really spent one day really chasing smallmouth.
So introducing the Journal to this fishery was something our Simms, Scott and Scientific Angler rep Eric Kraimer couldn’t pass up.
So off to Crooked Creen we went. Since Eric was travelling light on this tour through his territory, the Journal’s better half was tasked to put together a kit according to our instructions. Unfortunately it would have been better had we put wading boots on the “shopping list” alongside waders, flies, rods and more.
We could have pinched a pair of boots from Eric’s samples but he brought two left feet. But thank goodness for Keen sandals.
A couple of rods, a small box of flies each, a spool of tippet and we were in business. If you aren’t in the know, smallmouth tend to live in incredibly beautiful places.
Crooked Creek, even flowing through the centre of Yellville is a gorgeous little stream. It also happens to be a blue ribbon smallmouth fishery.
We didn’t exactly slay them, but we caught fish and had a good time doing it as you might be able to tell from the pictures. The fish were fat and feisty and beautifully marked.
If you haven’t tried smallmouth fishing we can get you set with expert guides. Stay tuned for more reports this week including some truly trophy fish.
