Steve 22" 'bow Rim Shoals _ How good is it going to be on low water, Davy Wotton Pic
It had been so long since I’d worn waders seriously the Journal rediscovered rule number 1. Don’t forget to zip up the fly on your wader pants. Second discovery, the water at the Dam is cooold. Yep we have been wading the past couple of days.
If you have had a little time to yourself free of work or family Gustav’s rainfall has been both a curse and a blessing. Yes it flooded the creek and is adding 3′ to the lakes but it has also created wading windows.
How much longer this will last is anyone’s guess but if you can catch it the fishing is very good. The closer you are to the Dam the better. Below Crooked Creek is chocolate milk, and every tributary stream above the Creek is adding its own flavor.
But one other word of warning, its probably been a longtime since you fished light so 5x is your best bet. The Journal connected to a very nice brown second cast at the Dam on Tuesday and promptly blew it with the leader taken through the weeds _ another change no didymo but some thick green vegetation.
We fished Davy’s Whitetail Super Midges on Tuesday, sowbugs and Tailwater Soft Hackles yesterday to great effect. None were as nice as Steve’s rainbow taken above on highwater but some 18″ ‘bows and that much better brown. Unfortunately we left the camera at home on both days so we used Davy’s pic instead. Highwater or low the White is fishing very well
NOTE: The speed at which the Corp has dropped the water levels the past two days has stranded many trout, and also killed off countless sculpins. Do the trout a favor and take a few minutes to get them back in the water if you are going to be fishing.
