OK we have to admit it the new Sage 4500 CF series reels are drop dead sexy-cool. Sage’s design team have accomplished the impossible, overturning the Journal’s favorite reel.Perhaps the Journal is becoming an old curmudgeon but while we love new gear the thought of our beloved 2500 series reels disappearing prompted a little twinge. There was a sentimental value on these reels, the best and most expensive we had ever purchased. Every nick had a story but these reels performed flawlessly
But as we mentioned Sage’s team had made a good looking reel even better looking, lighter more durable and now we have something else to lust for.
These reels share the same body (and dimensions as the 2500s) frame as the new 4500 series. There lines are familiar to 2500 series owner, slight tweaks to reduce weight are evident only on close examination. But the whole is somehow sleeker.
The frame is also what we’d probably describe as a pewter finish, elegant without the glare of the old silver. Certainly the matt black carbon fibre spool is distinctively different, shaving a bunch of weight over an aluminum spool. Its that kind of form following functionality, beauty created by a purpose, that makes these reels look so cool. Incidentally those carbon fibre spools do fit the 2500 series and look pretty slick on the old black frames.
