WHILE Fly Fishing is the more obviously photogenic pursuit, your probably seeing more flies on the big and large screens, courtesy of Graham Owen, than you realise.
If you saw a recent episode of “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” with bedbugs, those were realistically tied flies. The house flies in the Oscar nominated and winning film “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” were Graham’s ties as well. And the new Adam Sandler flick “Grown Ups” will give a big role to one of Graham’s bees _ look for the ice
Graham has turned his passion for fly tying, particularly realistic flies, into a successful business, Film Flies & Shutterbugs supplying studios like Disney, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Warner Brothers, Sony/Columbia Pictures, HBO & NBC Universal Television.
Other works are destined for Museums, photography studios and even retail window displays.
The Journal spoke to Graham last night at his Burbank office after finding his webpage though the Journal’s growing Facebook network of fly fishers and tyers all over the globe.
Graham has tied for about 16 years, including some demonstration tying, while he ran his solar panel business in LA. But tightening of the rules under which films can say that no animals were harmed in the making of the film means not even dead bugs can be filmed. So Graham, using his background of fly tying fills the void with his deceptions. He now had a team of tiers across the globe tying to meet orders.
Seriously you should check out his website. And if you need bugs. Oh and his photography site is pretty cool as well _ you will enjoy the fly fishing gallery.
