HIGH flows have been the order of the day on the White River but the deep nymphing has been very good. We have heard of some very big rainbows being caught on flies and a monster 20lb brown on spinning tackle.
Streamer fishing has also been good in bursts. There is a lot of focus on the promise of low water in August with the AGFC doing habitat work at the Bull Shoals Dam.
We were also made aware this week that one lane of traffic across the Bull Shoals Dam will be closed from 7am to 6pm every day for the next 5 months. Stop lights have been installed to control traffic flows.
WHITE RIVER: For the first time in many month Bull Shoals Lake is back to within 10′ of power pool after some solid generation. There have been a few hours of 2 units or less around midnight but sustained generation of 12,000cfs, to 18,000 cfs during the daylight hours.
Cooler temperature this weekend, particularly Sunday may dampen power demand, so keep the phone numbers handy and check the flows.
We have heard pretty decent reports from Buffalo City to the Dam for drifting fly fishers, particularly during the morning hours. Eggs and worms remain a mainstay, often in a “spaghetti and meatballs” dropper combination outside the trophy zones.
Try Veiled eggs, and Clown Eggs on the front with San Juans or Dynamite Worms in Red, Brown and Orange trailing. Marc Poulos told us running attractor patterns, like eggs or bright worms with a trailing mayfly is another good bet durign the afternoons when you will start seeing sulphurs still coming off.
Try Copper Johns, Pheasant Tails, Micro Mayflies or even darker midges.
On the streamer bite Zoo Cougars have been very good the big size 2 yellow ones, on fast sinking lines in around structure.
